Billy Moore Correctional Center employees working with the community

About halfway between Dallas and the Texas-Louisiana state line, lies the Billy Moore Correctional Center.  Just over three months ago, the 500-bed prison in Overton, Texas rejoined the MTC family.  Since that time, MTC employees have been getting reacquainted with their old neighbors.

Most Billy Moore CC employees reside in Rusk County or neighboring Gregg and Smith Counties.  Many of them are the same people who worked at the facility under its previous management.  Those who are new however, have been making a concerted effort to become active in the community.

Meanwhile, several visitors have also been making their way to the facility, to observe its operation under new management.  Several staff members from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) have visited and toured the facility since the January 16, 2009 MTC take over.  Billy Moore Correctional Center also hosted an employee and community luncheon on February 20, 2009.   Additionally, Billy Moore Correctional Center staff members have been supportive of the Overton/New London Chamber of Commerce and the Overton Rotary Club.

While participating in these many community activities, the facility’s top priority is still to keep employees, the community and inmates safe and secure.  Beyond this always primary goal, employees are dedicated to meeting the rehabilitative needs of Billy Moore inmates.

The facility’s education department has increased enrollment by 43% since MTC took control of the site.  Courses currently taught at Billy Moore CC include: GED, ABE, life skills, electrical trades, custodial maintenance and painting.  Additionally, future classes are expected to include computer introductory concepts and computer technology.

Finally, two community work service projects have been submitted to the state of Texas for approval.

MTC pledges to be a quality, active corporate neighbor where ever it operates.  Administrators and staff at the Billy Moore Correctional Center are attacking that challenge with vigor.
