Borallon Correctional Centre Custodial Supervisor accepts a Challenging Role

In a “former life,” Borallon Correctional Centre’s acting custodial supervisor, Jason May, worked in the electrical industry, ensuring households were secure and protected.  In his current position, May works to ensure safety standards are maintained inside the Queensland, Australia correctional facility operated by Management & Training Corporation.

“I thrive on the challenge of working in this type of environment,” May said.  “Learning new skills and having the opportunity to work and progress from custodial supervisor to correctional supervisor to manager is enticing to me.”

May said working in a prison requires high levels of patience and mental strength.

“The good news working for a company like (Management & Training Corporation) is that it is more oriented on getting people back into society and getting them straight,” he added.

May graduated from Borallon’s internal pre-service custodial course run by MTC.  The course focuses on training participants within the centre to deal with prisoners, trainees and fellow custodial officers.  Learning modules include key control, headcounts, discipline breaches and corrective services legislation.

“It may not be everybody’s cup of tea,” May concluded.  “But if you want learning and diversity in every day, I recommend working in corrections.”
