Borallon inmates donate special learning equipment to local school

Inmates at the MTC-operated Borallon Correctional Centre in Queensland, Australia are lending a helping hand to young students at the local Ipswich Special School.  Correctional Centre General Manager Troy Ittensohn is working with the school to try to provide inmate-made equipment to every classroom at the school.

The recent presentation of equipment marked the seventh time Borallon inmates have provided toys and learning materials to the school since 2003.  Ittensohn said the relationship between his facility and the school is as strong as ever.

The Australian school provides educations to children with Down Syndrome and other learning disabilities.  The inmates have assisted in designing and constructing equipment for the students’ particular needs.

Among the items donated on this occasion were:

  • Ceiling frames from which mobiles can be hung for visually-impaired students
  • Wheeled trolleys students use to roll themselves around; and
  • A wheelchair-accessible art table

Ittensohn says his facility is grateful for the opportunity to serve students with special needs.  He also adds, the experience is both rewarding and rehabilitative for inmates at the Borallon facility.
