Clearfield Student Earns Perfect GED Test Scores Clearfield Job Corps Center student Dewayne Lyman has earned four perfect test scores and an overall average score of 772 on his General Educational Development (GED) exam. Utah higher education officials are describing it as one of the best scores ever earned by a local student. “His 772 score is the highest in Utah so far this year,” said Murray Meszaros, Chief GED Examiner for the Utah State Office of Education. “I believe that score reflects a tremendous commitment from Dewayne to succeed – and an equally big commitment from instructors at the Clearfield Job Corps Center to help students succeed.” The 17-year-old Lyman is a native of Utah who once attended Kearns High School. He had been out of school four months prior to enrolling at the Clearfield Center. “I lost interest in school around 7th grade because they wouldn’t put me in advanced math classes and I got bored,” said Dewayne. “I just glided through school with a less than average grade point and just lost interest in staying.” Lyman is not alone. Some estimates claim the national high school drop out rate is as high as 30%. A goal oriented student, Dewayne decided to attend Clearfield Job Corps Center to obtain his high school diploma and complete welding and machining trades. “After completing my goals at Job Corps, I want to get a good job and maybe go to college.” Center Director Dean Hoffman said, “Our mission here at the Clearfield Job Corps Center is to provide an opportunity for our youth to receive an education and job training for a career. We might be just the right fit for students who decide public high school is not for them.” Clearfield is one of the largest and busiest Job Corps centers in the country. Each year the center bestows about 700 GEDs and High School diplomas. The Davis County site also graduates more than 1000 students annually, with accredited vocational training. (Posted 6/02/06) |
