Dalby transport officers thwart possible kidnapping

Giles W. Dalby Correctional Facility Transportation Officers Jesse Basquez and Stephen Montoya became heroes recently, while transporting an inmate from their facility to another federal correctional facility in Eden, Texas.  As the officers were driving through the town of Big Spring, Texas, they witnessed two males kicking the door of a small green car that was pulled over on the side of the road.

The female driving the green car sped away and the two males gave chase in a black Dodge Charger.  The driver of the Charger began to crash into the side of the small green car in an effort to make the car stop.  Once stopped, the two males exited the Charger and approached the green car on both sides.

One of the males dragged the female from the car and began to beat her.  The other male opened the passenger side door and removed a baby from the car.  The two males then sped off, with the child.

Officers Montoya and Basquez called 911 and began to follow the suspect vehicle from a distance.  They provided the location of the Charger to the dispatch operator who relayed it to the police.

Minutes later, Big Spring Police located the Charger and stop it.  At that point, the officers also noticed a second child – approximately four years old – was also in the suspect vehicle.  Both male suspects were taken into custody.

If not for the officers’ willingness to act, a kidnapping would likely have been successful.  The officers knew they could not become physically involved in this incident.  But they also understood their civic obligation to intervene in a safe manner.

“We train our officers to be prepared for many types of emergencies,” said Giles W. Dalby Correctional Facility Warden Kerry Dixon.  “We are proud of the appropriate actions they took in Big Springs.”
