Inland Empire Job Corps students helping to restore history Students from the MTC-operated Inland Empire Job Corps Center are working hard this fall to help preserve history in their San Bernardino, California community. Some of the center’s carpentry students are volunteering their time to assist in the restoration of a Victorian-style home, built in 1891. The “Heritage House” is owned by the San Bernardino Historical and Pioneer Society, a group of community residents and history enthusiasts. Members of the society supervised the Job Corps students, as they chipped away rotted wood and installed new lumber on the home’s classical elevated porch. The Society is always in need of stretching its restoration budget as far as possible. Members say the Job Corps volunteers have offered a great service. Job Corps carpentry instructor Rochelle Heflin tries to make her students available to assist in community projects whenever possible. She says it is rewarding to see her students learn while also working to benefit the community. (10/10/06) |
