ASP Kingman pen pets program continues to thrive

The Companion Animal Rescue Efforts (CARE) Network and Management and Training Corporation (MTC) Arizona State Prison - Kingman, recently held a graduation ceremony and open house for newly-trained dogs and their trainers at the prison.

The public was invited to the event and area residents who were interested in adopting one of the dogs took time to fill out applications.

The dog training program is a partnership between CARE-Net and MTC.  It has two primary purposes.  First, it saves dogs from being euthanized at the county animal shelter.  Secondly, the process provides a very positive experience for the inmates.

Each of the five dogs in the recently completed program underwent an extensive, eight-week training process with prison inmates. The dogs spend nearly all day with inmates.

As part of the program, inmates must keep a daily log of the dog's behavior, eating habits and training accomplishments.

By the end of the two month course, dogs can sit, stay, lie down, come and heel with or without a leash. Each dog is then put up for adoption.
