ASP-Kingman Staff carry Special Olympics torch
The Special Olympics torch made its way through Kingman, Arizona in late April, en route to the Summer Special Olympic Games in Tempe. The torch traveled through the cities of athletes who participated in the games.
This year, the torch started in Kingman with Rick Eyestone, a Sergeant at the Management and Training Corporation (MTC)-operated Arizona State Prison-Kingman. Eyestone and 14 other dedicated officers and staff members from the prison complex joined two Special Olympic athletes to run the first leg of the torch run.
Participating in the first leg of the run were correction officers Sgt. James Jones and Sgt. Jay King. MTC employees Roberta Candelaria, Josh Mayfield, Vicki Brown, Shawn Spear, Yvonne Rydgrem, Patrick Marcott, Michael Macklin, Travis Wallman, Andrea Carosezei and Carl Allen also ran the first leg.
After a short break, Eyestone and his staff continued on their run to Golden Valley, Arizona where the torch was passed on to a volunteer posse member from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office.
This year, Special Olympic athlete delegations from Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City joined their counterparts from throughout Arizona to compete in their state games in early May.
