Long Beach JC students assist with greenhouse project
Long Beach Job Corps Facility Maintenance students are using the skills acquired in their career technical training class to help with a community project.
The students are assisting with the transfer of three greenhouses from the Regional Occupations Program (ROP) to the Veterans Medical Center. The greenhouses are being donated to the Veterans Medical Center in Long Beach.
Disabled military veterans make use of the greenhouses in a variety of ways. Many enjoy learning how to grow different fruits, vegetables and plants. In addition to serving that population, the project also provided a great opportunity for Long Beach students to perform a real life, hands on project.
The first phase of the project took place last year when Long Beach Facilities Maintenance Instructor Kenneth Jenkins took students to the ROP to help dismantle the greenhouses. The students will also help re-assemble the greenhouses once the Veterans Medical Center is ready to accommodate the structure.
