Marana Town Council considering allowing additional inmate classes

Marana (Arizona) Community Correctional Treatment Facility (MCCTF) Warden Lori Lieder made a recent appearance before the Marana Town Council. She explained to elected officials in the community north or Tucson how allowing inmates convicted of nonviolent property crimes into the facility would allow MTC to fill 50 more beds.

Lieder said the 500-bed facility now houses 450 inmates. But the Arizona Department of Corrections could fill the vacancies if the town allowed the change.

Under its original agreement with Marana, MTC is only allowed to house inmates classified by the state to be in its two lowest threat categories, and only those convicted of the lowest level felonies. Under the MTC proposal, Warden Lieder said MCCTF would still not allow violent offenders. But the site would be able to house and treat low-risk, non-violent property crime convicts.

Management and Training Corporation Corrections Marketing Director Jack Hartwig said the company would like permission to admit inmates convicted of nonviolent theft and fraud. This has been precluded under the current agreement.
