MTC Wardens’ Conference a big hit in San Diego

This year the 2007 Wardens' Conference was held on Coronado Island, California – near San Diego – from March 25 to March 30.  Management & Training Corporation Correctional professionals gathered at the Hotel Del Coronado for five days of studying and recreating.

The conference provided the opportunity to recognize successes over the last year and to make plans and changes for the coming year.

Key conference topics included:

Association of State Corrections Administrators Performance-Based Measure Standards: ASCA is a national association comprised of the country's leading correctional system administrators. Its charge is to develop consistent, meaningful, performance measures in an automated system to collect and analyze data. Current ASCA standards include public safety, institution safety, substance abuse, mental health and justice.

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA): A representative from The Moss Group, Inc. discussed the incidence and prevalence of sexual assault within correction facilities and insights into how wardens can contribute to the reduction of victimization and assault within their facilities.

Facility Updates: Wardens provided updates about their facility's progress over the last year and initiatives moving forward with regards to programming, standards compliance, expansions, community service projects, PREA, etc.

Success for Life: Anita Dutson recognized North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility and Kyle Correctional Center for achieving Success for Life accreditation, communicated programming goals, and provided an overview of the scope of publications being released this summer.

The MTC wardens also had fun “roasting” one of their own.  Wardens took friendly shots at Giles W. Dalby Correctional Facility Warden Joe Rasbeary, who announced his retirement coming at the end of April 2007.
