Delaware Valley, Oneonta and Red Rock Job Corps Centers compete in Academic Olympics

Six Job Corps centers from the northeastern United States – including three operated by Management & Training Corporation – competed this month in the 17th annual Job Corps Academic Olympics.

Students were asked questions such as: ‘What are the three branches of the federal government?’ and ‘What is the lowest term fraction to which 0.375 can be reduced?’

Thirty-six students from six Job Corps centers participated in the competition in hopes of taking home the gold.
“The students have done a lot of work and practiced for months,” said Lori Olshefski, spokeswoman for the Red Rock Job Corps Center, this year’s host of the competition. “This event encourages them to learn more, helps them with public speaking and they get a chance to meet other Job Corps students.”

MTC operates the Red Rock center.  Other MTC centers participating in the event included Delaware Valley and Oneonta, both from New York State.
Five students on each team specialize in one specific subject: language arts, spelling, science, social studies and mathematics. The sixth team member is used as an alternate, who studies all five subjects.

MTC centers placed first and second in the annual competition.  The Oneonta Job Corps Center won, scoring 75 points.  That team now advances to the regional finals in Ocean City, Maryland.  Meantime, the Red Rock center came up just one point short, finishing second with 74 points.
