North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility hosts Mental Health Training

North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility recently hosted a Specialized Mental Health Training session.   Several staff members participated including the security staff from each of the facility’s housing units.

Also attending the session were the Lorain O.D.R.C. Mental Health Cluster Administrator, Mental Health Nursing Director (both from the Lorain Correctional Institution), and a representative from the mental health department from Grafton Correctional Institution. The Bureau of Mental Health’s Linkage Coordinator also attended.

Dr. Shura Hegde of First Correctional Medical was instrumental in the organization of the event and served as the keynote speaker.  He discussed multiple mental health disorders with those in attendance.

Dr. Hedge focused much of his talk on how to properly identify schizophrenia, signs and symptoms of the disease and various treatments.
Mr. Ajay Mehta of Janssen Pharmaceutical, Inc. also provided a unique presentation. He provided a computer system which allowed North Coast staff to work interactively. As training session attendees moved in different directions, various audio and visual stimuli were presented depicting what an inmate suffering from schizophrenia experiences.

Attendees said this was a valuable training experience which helped them to further understand schizophrenia.
