Oneonta Job Corps students assist city police department
Students at New York State’s Oneonta Job Corps Center recently received some valuable work experience, while also assisting their community’s police department and taxpayers.
City officials asked the Job Corps for assistance in converting a marked Oneonta police car into an unmarked vehicle. The city paid a small amount for parts. In return, it recently received a restored vehicle that could be used for city parking enforcement or water-meter reading.
Oneonta Job Corps Academy Business and Community Liaison Victoria Pegg said there are about ten students in her center’s collision repair and refinishing program. Seven of the students assisted in refurbishing the city vehicle.
The auto-trades program at Oneonta also includes an automotive mechanic program, with about 10 students. These types of opportunities give students in the auto trade the work-based hours they need to graduate. Students say projects like this also make them feel more connected to the community.
The restoration work included many types of repairs, including dent removal, priming, sanding and painting.
