Establishing employment opportunities at the Potomac Job Corps Center
Several Potomac Job Corps Center administrators attended a recent meeting with Washington DC officials and educators. The focus of the gathering was to explore potential Career and Technical Education opportunities for Job Corps students within the District of Columbia.
The meeting focused on what assistance Job Corps graduates could provide to the District as it carries out billions of dollars worth of current and future construction projects.
Large construction companies have a contractual obligation to hire a certain percentage of workers from within the District of Columbia. City officials expressed concerned during the meeting about their limited workforce. The Potomac Job Corps Center is being viewed as a viable employment resource for these projects.
Center officials signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). This MOU stipulates that the EEOC will educate center students about their workplace rights and responsibilities. This will be done through regular sessions with Potomac students during Career Transition and Career Preparation classes and periodically in other on-center classroom settings, as appropriate.
Both Potomac and District officials left the meeting feeling it marked the beginning of a great partnership and cooperative agreement that will provide many exciting new opportunities for Job Corps graduates.
