Job Corps students honored for volunteerism

The Editorial Board for the Reno Gazette-Journal newspaper has cited volunteer staff members and students at the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center for their outstanding efforts this spring, during National & Global Youth Service Day.  The volunteers stretched the service “day” into about a month, donating more than 4200 hours in volunteer time for a community service project.

Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center is operated by Management & Training Corporation.  Students and staff there constructed 47 new wooden bunk beds, ladders and underbed storage compartments for the Camp We Ch Me Lodge at Galena Creek Regional Park, on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, outside Reno.

Job Corps partner REI Inc. assisted in the endeavor by donating $10,000 for building materials.  The work was coordinated through the Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space organization.

Thirty carpentry students spent 2540 hours cutting wood; 15 painting students donated 1217 hours staining the wood; and 16 other carpentry students devoted 451 hours to installing the bunks.
Galena Creek Park is about seven miles outside Reno, Nevada.  The site offers campfire programs, ranger-led hikes and visitor center exhibits.  Job Corps students say they are proud to have assisted in improving the popular the site.
