Sierra Nevada Job Corps students awarded in competition
Two students from the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Center (SNJCC) in Reno have received awards in a statewide culinary arts competition. The pair competed against about 600 students in the State of Nevada Skills USA Competition.
One student earned a gold medal in the Job Skills – Demonstration category for Culinary Arts. The other placed third, receiving a bronze medal in the Interview Skills category. The gold medal winner also qualified to complete in the National Skills USA Competition.
“Our students work incredibly hard,” said Debora Aragon, Sierra Nevada JCC Culinary Arts Instructor. “They practice their skills day in and day out to get to the level they are at. I am very proud of them.”
SNJCC provides educational and employment training in 16 vocations for underprivileged youth ages 16-24 in Nevada. The hands-on learning environment and practical skills application allow students to learn a tremendous amount in a very short period of time.
“Competitions like this help students gain self confidence,” said Ken Dugan, Sierra Nevada Center Director. “We provide them opportunities to demonstrate their skills and the support system they need. Our student competitors have an entire campus cheering them on.”
