Tongue Point Job Corps starts construction of its largest project ever

Astoria, Oregon’s Tongue Point Job Corps Center will soon be home to one of the nicest culinary art facilities in the entire Job Corps system. In fact administrators at the facility believe the improvement will create a culinary arts training program that can rival the nationally recognized Western Culinary Institute, in nearby Portland.

Crews broke ground on the center’s new 17,000 square foot structure in July. The $4.5-million project is scheduled for completion next year.

“This is going to benefit students because it’s going to give them the same training they would get at a very high-priced culinary school,” said Tongue Point Center Director Nancy Pyburn.

Job Corps officials say this is the largest construction project every carried out at the Tongue Point center, since its opening forty years ago. About 500 young men and women, ages 16 to 24, now train at the facility, situated at the mouth of the Columbia River on Oregon’s Pacific Coast.
