Job Corps volunteers light up the Christmas spirit An unusually wet and icy start to the winter season did not stop volunteers from the Tongue Point Job Corps Center in Astoria, Oregon from assisting their community in decorating for the holiday season. Job Corps volunteers were among the fifty who turned out just before Thanksgiving to makeover the Pacific Northwest community for the holiday season. The young volunteers assisted the “Astoria Christmas Club” in hanging holiday lights, garlands and decorations throughout the city’s historic downtown area. Nine Job Corps volunteers and their instructor, Jim Murray, participated in the work. They were joined by volunteers from the local fire department, public works office and power company. The decorating took volunteers several days. It was completed in time for the community’s annual “Downtown Lighting Ceremony” held on Saturday night of Thanksgiving weekend. This project was just one of many undertaken throughout the year by Tongue Point Job Corps Center students. Earlier in the year, Job Corps volunteers also assisted in the renovation of an historic Astoria theater. (Posted 12/10/06) |
