Award-Winning Tongue Point Job Corps graduate pursues new opportunities
The life of one Tongue Point Job Corps Center student has had more ups and downs than most teens would ever expect. But Daniella Horsely has learned to overcome the bad times. Now she looks forward to a promising future.
Horsely – a student at the Job Corps center in Astoria – is one of six young adults recently honored with the Oregon Governor's Youth Award. The award goes to youths who have taken positive steps to turn their lives around, and are now also contributing to the success of others.
She received her award from Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski during an award ceremony in Portland. At Tongue Point, Horsely is pursuing an office technology vocation in hopes of someday becoming an airline or Amtrak attendant.
An Ohio native, Horsely was 11 when she was thrust into the role of mother to her two younger siblings when her mother died. She said her life changed dramatically again when she entered the Tongue Point Job Corps program in May 2006.
When she completes her Job Corps studies at Tongue Point, Horsely hopes to move to San Jose, California to enroll in an advanced Job Corps program in the transportation field.
