MTC focuses on assisting women in pursuit of corrections careers
Women who choose to pursue careers in corrections can face a variety of challenges. These challenges can vary greatly, depending on many different factors. It is often a constant challenge for women to determine how they can best fit into this male dominated field. MTC is working to improve the odds for female correctional employees.
The “Women in Corrections” Committee at the Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut, Ohio is taking on this challenge. The committee now has a new core group of six women in key leadership positions at the facility. They are promoting fresh ideas and utilizing leadership skills to help train women in the corrections field.
The group stresses the motto, “We are all women in corrections.” Their goal is to come together to support one another as professionals through teaching and education.
The Women in Corrections group was originally formed in 2001. At that time it was under the direction of Lake Erie’s former Deputy Warden of Programs Jackie Thomas. Thomas has since moved on to become the warden at nearby North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility, in Grafton, Ohio.
Before moving on however, Thomas was instrumental in helping to revise the Women in Corrections group. While doing so, she also challenged members to be positive role models for males and females alike.
The mission of the MTC “Women in Corrections” Committee is to:
- Establish a company-wide leadership and mentoring program for female employees
- Establish strategies for women’s long-term promotional success; and
- Advance women’s correctional techniques, particularly in the areas of development, staff training and correctional management.
