Willacy County Processing Center sustains hurricane damage
Hurricane Dolly damaged some of the domed tents at the Willacy County Processing Center earlier this month, preventing officials from returning illegal immigrants who were evacuated before an earlier storm.
Rain from the Category 2 hurricane drenched the domes while the storm's 100-mph winds shot debris into some walls. Dolly damaged nine of the detention center's 10 domes.
Rain from the hurricane also leaked into the domes through air conditioning vents and winds carried debris that punctured the domes with incisions as long as 6 inches.
Repairs began on the damaged property just as soon as the weather allowed. The storm-forced evacuations took the inmate count down below 700 inmates for a time.
The detention center features a 1000-bed metal building which sustained less damage and was able to continue to house inmates effectively during the storm. |
