Like so many other institutions, the Kyle Correctional Center, in Kyle, Texas, went into lockdown in March as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Despite this, the programming department continued providing educational opportunities to the residents. Teachers would leave the schoolwork for their students at the facility blocks, then return and pick them up for grading and review. Through this process, several of the men stayed on track to achieve their goals. Two men who were recently awarded their GEDs spoke about their achievement.

“I know one of my goals while being here at Kyle was to get my GED…then we got put on lockdown due to the COVID. It was just real fortunate that I worked hard and studied, and I was able to do it thanks to Ms. Ryan and everybody that made this possible. Thank you all.”

“It’s been a very worthwhile experience in my life. I know I made some mistakes that got me here, but throughout this program and throughout my time here, I’ve learned some new perspectives and outlooks. I’ve changed some of my outlooks on life, and I’ve been able to accomplish my GED. I really put my mind to it, and I got it. And I’m excited to say that I’m moving on with my life.”
