The Maui Job Corps Center will join 126 Job Corps centers across the country to celebrate the “National Job Corps Commencement Day” ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017.
The event will recognize 30 students who have obtained their high school diplomas or completed a career path at the facility.
Graduates will be joined by community leaders, local elected officials and family members to recognize their achievements and investments they made in their futures.
Celebrated Chef Bev Gannon, who has partnered with the Job Corps Culinary training program in Makawao for several years, will be the keynote speaker.
During her involvement, Gannon has provided mentoring opportunities by allowing Job Corps students to job shadow and intern at her establishments, with some offered long-term upon graduation.
Student Shania Mallarme, who recently completed the program, is among those who will take part in the ceremony. While enrolled in the program, Mallarme completed her training in Office Administration and participated in internships at Maui Lani Physicians and Surgeons offices and HNU Energy.
She obtained her high school diploma in partnership with McKinley Community School for Adults. Described by Job Corps administrators “as a bright, articulate and motivated student,” Mallarme “set clear goals for success and steadily completed each task assigned with determination and perseverance.”
Mallarme is currently employed full-time at HNU Energy and is looking forward to enrolling at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College. “Job Corps is an amazing opportunity, I joined the program and took full advantage of what it had to offer and the feeling of accomplishment is awesome,” Mallareme said.
Maui Job Corps Center is one of 126 Job Corps centers located across the country. A unique national program, Job Corps offers low income youth a set of diverse academic opportunities and career pathways tailored to meet the needs of business and industry.
