NEWS: Turner Job Corps students helping out in Cairo this week
CAIRO, Ga. (WFXL) — One group is volunteering their time to help out with debris clean-up this week.
Turner Job Corps has teamed up with Sherwood Baptist Church to help the victims who are still suffering after last week’s EF-2 tornado in Cairo.
Early Tuesday morning, over 20 heavy equipment operator students that are part of the International Union of Operating Engineers and staff members from Turner Job Corps will travel to Cairo with two skid steer loaders to help with clean-up.
Work Based Learning Coordinator Melvin Drake says the group will be moving heavy debris from people’s homes to the right of way.
He says the goal is to help out while also giving students hands-on experience.
“Our students are well equipped and they’re able to handle the equipment that they operate and they’re very familiar with what they need to do. Now, by them actually going to volunteer, that helps out for them as far as getting clock hours and things that they have to do as well,” said Drake.
Drake says the students will be volunteering on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
He says if you have any items you’d like to donate, victims still need things like sack lunches, non-perishable items and toiletries. These items can be brought to the Old Coke Plant at 925 Pine Avenue.
Drake says Turner Job Corps has already volunteered over 1,500 community service hours this year.
