On the Road to Becoming an Electrician Thanks to Wilmington Job Corps

Video Shot Before COVID-19

Marcus Johnson gets ready for another day of training at the Wilmington Job Corps Center. He’s studying facilities maintenance.

“I love it,” he says. “I love it more than what I was going to do previously, which was office administration.”

He says high school just wasn’t working out for him, but Job Corps clicked.

“I can get my high school diploma here and a trade which I find is better than high school, because you get more out of it—to me.”

Instructor Michael Lumpkin teaches Marcus the tricks of the trade preparing his students for certifications and job success. As for Marcus, Michael says…

“He has very good potential because of the fact that he’s more analytical, so he analyses everything.”

Marcus wants to become an electrician one day. It’ll require additional training after Job Corps, but he’s ready and recognizes what he’s doing will benefit his life.

“I want to make myself useful.”
