Watch as One Student at Hubert H. Humphrey Explains Why Job Corps Works

Video Shot Before COVID-19

“Life before Job Corps, I would say was not terrible for me but, I was in that stage of working at a job that wasn’t going to lead me to a career.”

Erika Jamison explains how Job Corps has provided her with a great path toward future success. Before Job Corps, she wasn’t prepared for the workforce.

“I didn’t have the skills. My biggest dilemma was being able to keep a job. I was not putting myself in a position to start a career. So, I was ready to go beyond that and fulfill my potential.”

So, Erika enrolled at MTC’s Hubert H. Humphrey Job Corps in Minnesota. She completed the culinary program and is now earning certifications in the advanced Transportation Communications International Union program.

“Just Knowing that there is going to be a positive outcome, if I finish, is ultimately what kept me going.”

Erika is also a student ambassador at Hubert H. Humphrey. She enjoys helping new students adjust to Job Corps.

So, seeing people come from literally rock bottom and succeeding is a really good feeling because I know that being an ambassador, I have made some sort of impact on their success.”

She says at the end of the day it all comes down to how bad you want it.

“Be committed to yourself. Don’t forget why you came here. You didn’t come here to make friends or anything like that. It’s great if you do, however, you’re here to get a trade.”
