Student Tyrone Burroughs Cooks Up His Future Plans at the Edison Job Corps Center

Tyrone Burroughs is studying culinary arts at the MTC-operated Edison Job Corps Center in New Jersey. He has high hopes for his career.

“I plan on getting my bachelor’s degree and becoming an entrepreneur and owner of my own restaurant,” he says.

But first he has to graduate from Job Corps and then get a degree in culinary arts from nearby Middlesex County College.

“It’s going to take some time, but I’m willing to put in the work.”

Edison Job Corps chef and instructor Ralph Amiano teaches the students the skills they need to succeed in culinary arts. Jobs are plentiful for these students.

“There’s a ton of job opportunities for food service,” says Chef Amiano.

Tyrone appreciates the training he’s getting from Job Corps and his instructor. “Chef, he’s very inspirational. He inspires me, coming from where I came from.”

Tyrone had a difficult upbringing, having to take on heavy responsibility as a young teenager. He enrolled in Job Corps to improve his life and support his family.

“Taking care of my family. Like me being the man of the household since I was younger and me trying to make my mother proud,” Tyrone says. “I just want to make my family happy.”

“What I like about Job Corps is you meet new and different personalities,” he continues. “And it’s molding and shaping you into a new person, a better person.”
