The woodworking class at the Sanders Estes Unit in Venus, Texas is involved in a labor of love.

“It gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I’m helping someone else. It gives me a drive. I have expectations to help others like that.”

Broderick Babineaux is one of several residents who are making toys for children who find themselves in difficult situations at home and have been placed in child protective services.

For Broderick, helping these kids hits close to home.

“In my case, I have a heart that goes out for them because I have nieces and nephews who are in CPS. So doing toys for them gives me joy.”

Not only are they helping local children in need—they’re also helping themselves by learning carpentry skills that can lead to jobs after they’re released.

“This class gives me a benefit, potential to be a better person out there.”
