If you remember the recent story about the Sierra Nevada Job Corps Trade Olympics, you’ll recall that students were competing to make it to the state event. Well, the state competition—called SkillsUSA Nevada—just wrapped up and the results are in!

Hundreds of hand-picked vocational students from dozens of Nevada high schools and technical institutes, including Sierra Nevada Job Corps, met in Reno to compete in a wide variety of contests designed to test proficiency in everything from architectural drafting to welding fabrication. A select group of Sierra Nevada Job Corps students swept four events—while capturing the Gold and Silver medals in two others. Below is a list of the winners:

Medical administrative Assistant Instructor Lyndsay Evans planned, organized and oversaw the entire week of events.

“We really came through this year winning all these medals.  Our people did an outstanding job. They  made me and my fellow faculty advisors Julie Stone, Manuel Gonzalez, and Michael Thomas (IMG 1796) proud to be a part of their efforts.  They certainly deserved to win, in my humble opinion.  They practiced and practiced and practiced—and won.  Honors to them.”

Student Ariana Davis took a lot away from the event, “I was really nervous before the competition, but it turned out fantastic. It was good practice for the real world. I’m more confident about myself, now.”

“I’ve never won a medal before,” said Pharm Tech student Maurquis Reliford, one of the Gold Medal winners and student government president, “ and standing as a winner in front of that big crowd getting applause…that was a nice feeling.”

Sierra Nevada Job Corps has long been involved with SkillsUSA, a national partnership of students, teachers, and industry. The two organizations share the same goal: working to ensure students excel and become part of a quality, skilled workforce through a structured program of citizenship, leadership, employability, and professional skills training.

The National SkillsUSA competition is scheduled to begin June 25, 2018 in Louisville, Kentucky.
